Floods have swept away three suspension bridges and a local micro hydroelectricity project, besides burying eight people to death, in Pyuthan district of western Nepal.
Torrential rainfall for four days triggered landslides in the northern region of the district on Monday night. Human casualties were reported in Rajwara VDC and Punja VDC, while bridges were swept away at Gunchyang Khola, Korche Ghat and Gorshang of Arkha VDC.
Four other bridges are at risk at Arkha. Floods affected the local 10KW micro hydel project at Susaune Khola in Arkha, according to Dilip Budha, a local resident. Likewise, Gaumukhi Temple has also been affected by floods.
Meanwhile, swollen Jhimruk River has caused damage in several places. Authorities said they are collecting details of the damage.
According to Jhimruk Hydroelectricity Project, there was an abrupt rise in water level in the river this morning.
The flow of river was recorded as 644.9 cubic metre per second at 4 am. This was the highest reading after 13 years.
The flow of water, however, was 79.6 and 150 at 2 am and 3 am respectively.
Thulabensi Bazaar has been inundated after the river made it to the area, and the flood water is gradually entering Bagdula area forcing the locals to but panic. Several infrastructures and private properties have been inundated in Bijuwar area.
Seven rescued
Meanwhile, seven labourers from Rolpa district, who were stuck in an island of Jhimruk River at Baraunla following floods, have been rescued.
They were working to construct an irrigation canal between Udik and Hariyatari.
Nepal Police personnel deployed from Balaura and Nepal Army personnel from Khalanga rescued them to safety.
Tragedy
Five persons, aged one-and-half-years to 40, of a single family were killed after a landslide hit their houses in Neta of Rajwara.
Two members of the family were sleeping in the balcony of the ill-fated house. They managed to escape to safety after the landslide fell upon their house, according to a local.
Two others, who had stayed over at their neighbour’s house, however, were unharmed.
In Bangliwang of Punja VDC, three persons of a Dalit family lost their life after their house collapsed following a landslide.
The incident sites lie in remote areas bordering Gulmi and Baglung districts.
